If you own or operate a generator that is connected and operated in parallel with the mains utility network either low voltage or 132kV, you will have a protection scheme that will disconnect the generator in the event of an abnormality of supply or fault on the generator.
Keep reading to learn more.
If you own or operate a generator connected to the distribution network, you’re urged to apply now to the Accelerated Loss of Mains Change Programme (known as ALoMCP). By applying, you could be paid thousands of pounds in the next few months to make mandatory Loss of Mains protection changes. These must be made by 1 September 2022, even if you haven’t applied to the programme. If your system was built before February 2018 you should be making arrangements to upgrade your protection to G99 standard or G59.3.7 as a minimum, this is a requirement under the generation license and should not be over looked.
Engineering recommendation G59 and more recently G99 is a design requirement for a protection system that monitors and disconnects the generator in the event of a network or generator fault. The use of the following protection elements are used to protect the network and your asset.
Over voltage U>, Under voltage U<, Over frequency F>, under frequency F< & loss of mains.
The main changes to the protection requirements revolve around loss of mains element, the exclusion of vector shift protection and the implementation of widened window of RoCoF from 0.5Hz/s or less to 1.0Hz/s will help to allow a ride through during a network fault and reduce the amount of generators cascade tripping as a result making the problem worse.
Enerpower Ltd can help you asses your assets and determine the best course of action to bring your site into compliance. We are listed on the ENA's protection support contractors list.
We have the skills to perform none intrusive site inspections and desktop audits of settings and schemes to either change the existing settings and submit test documentation the distribution network operator or change the entire relay if required. The majority of costs can be recovered under the ALoMCP scheme and we will help on your behalf to make the process as smooth as possible.
The ALoMCP scheme will not last forever and does not have an endless pot, so get in touch today.
